Frequently
Asked
Questions

Here are questions we are frequently asked

Where does the tutoring take place?

Tutoring takes place at our tutoring office located at Nalu Lani Plaza - 401 Kamakee St, #311, Honolulu, Hi 96814. This is upstairs from Lin's Hawaiian Snacks with ample metered parking next to the building.

At what age can my child start enrichment programs?

Toddlers (ages 1-3) can prepare for the school environment with a positive kinesthetic approach. Toddlers tend to be kinesthetic learners that process information best by touching, feeling, and experiencing, so we educate and prepare your child for a “school” environment with a “play” approach as young as 2 years old.

Does my child need an evaluation?

Yes, we require a consultation and informal assessment with one of our specialized tutors to ensure we give an ethical recommendation that meets the needs of your child and helps our team to focus on your child’s individualized programming. We need to assess each students visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning style, interests, personality, levels of learning preferences, and levels of development before creating a lesson plan.

How does the process work?

Once you contact us, we do have an intake process. This does include an informal assessment to see where your child is performing at. We also ask that you share any medical reports, school evaluations, and schoolwork to help give us more information on your child’s learning style and needs.

What types of curriculums do you use?

All our curriculum is evidence based and research based. Some of the programs we use are, Reading Mastery, Reading Milestones, Expressive Writing Programs, and Touch Math, just to name a few. These programs are direct instructional programs that are highly structured and break apart the lessons into small teachable parts.  Our experienced professional tutors provide personalized academic materials with proven strategies that develop essential education skills.

Will tutoring affect my child’s learning in school?

Working individually with each learner to tackle education challenges, we find that students understand how educational concepts apply to their daily lives, they learn to appreciate and often begin to enjoy thinking through problems, looking for patterns, and logically come up with solutions. Our students benefit from a completely personalized educational program that increases engagement during the learning process, fosters academic improvement, and critical thinkers.

How does MICAA work with me as a parent?

We provide frequent updates on the students’ progress with insights on advancements or struggles. This will allow the guardian more insight to communicate and work with your child’s school for learning advancements.

Do you work with my child’s schools?

We will consult with schools with consent from parents, however there is an additional fee for this. Some examples of consultation with schools are guiding parents through the Special Education process with Department of Education (DOE), attending meetings with schools/and or teachers.

Does my child have to miss school to come for classes?

No.

Can my child receive 1:1 teaching?

Yes. We will recommend 1:1 session for students. Young students who have minimal independent skills will benefit from a short period of 1:1 teaching. Soon they'll be proud to demonstrate what they can achieve with greater independence. Children with ADHD/ADD may need 1:1 service. Once the student learns to increase his/her own attention span, it is beneficial to gradually introduce another child nearby, in preparation for the classroom setting. An essential goal for all students is to prepare them for school performance - that means the ability to work successfully alongside other students in the classroom.

How long is each session?

Sessions range from 1-2 hours. However, this will be determined after our initial consultation and assessment with your child.

How many sessions a week?

This will be determined once we complete our informal assessment. From there, we will give you our professional recommendations for your child.

How long do most students stay with you?

It is dependent on the student’s progress and the goals and outcomes of parents. After initial goals are met, we discuss what academic goals to achieve next. I’ve had children start from preschool that currently are in high school.
